About Seth Johnson

Teaching Artist — Performer and Educator alike

Seth Johnson is an educator with a proven track record of academic and performance excellence. Seth started his teaching career in the Toledo area in 2017, when he began working with Forte Music School. He obtained his Master of Music in Performance from the University of Toledo in 2021, where he served as the teaching assistant for numerous courses; there, Seth assisted teaching vocal pedagogy & repertoire at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, helped lead the opera workshop course, conducted the Chamber Singers vocal ensemble, proctored and graded music theory exams, and lead undergraduate voice lessons for Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance majors. Since graduating, Mr. Johnson has been teaching both privately and collegiately at Owens Community College, where he leads courses such as music business, professions of music, class piano for non-majors, applied lessons in both voice and piano—he even directed the Owens Voices ensemble for a semester!

Both private students and collegiate transfer-track students of Seth’s have been admitted at major university programs around the region, including Eastern Michigan University, Bowling Green State University, and University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater, and Dance. Students who have not pursued collegiate music enjoy healthy engagement with the region’s art scene, performing with local community theaters, community choral ensembles, and the Toledo Opera chorus.

Seth Johnson has also built quite the reputation as a performer. He is a tenor hailed as “a producer’s dream hire” and known for his easy navigation of complex works, quick consumption of new repertoire, and passion for performance. Originally from small-town Illinois, Seth moved to Ohio shortly after the completion of his bachelor's degree at Bradley University, where he began working with many local arts organizations such as Toledo Opera, Detroit Opera, Ohio Light Opera, Great Lakes Light Opera, South Bend Lyric Opera, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony, and Bellissima Opera/Working in Concert. Johnson works with many of these companies regularly, being cast in roles of various sizes including: Vanderdendur in Candide, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, L’amante in Amelia al ballo, Archibald Grosvenor in Patience, Gabriel von Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Camille in The Merry Widow, Spoletta in Tosca, tenor soloist in Carmina Burana, and Odysseus in the world premiere of Our American Odyssey at South Bend Lyric Opera.

When he is neither teaching nor singing, Seth uses his active time found exploring new musical repertoire, reading up on new vocal pedagogical literature, going to see local theatrical productions, or indulging his guilty pleasure of building computers. He spends his leisure time playing the occasional game on those computers or playing with his two dogs, Vivi and Gershwin.
